Series production of containerized hydrogen electrolysis systems
The Challenge
Plug Power set out to create the world’s first truly plug-and-play hydrogen electrolysis system, designed to make green hydrogen production as accessible and scalable as possible. The aim: deliver a pre-assembled, fully tested, transportable system that can be deployed quickly at locations such as offshore wind farms and solar parks to convert renewable electricity into green hydrogen.
They needed a manufacturing partner capable of translating their technology into high-performance, containerized systems, ensuring precision, repeatability, and safe integration of complex hydrogen processes—at scale. This would allow Plug Power to focus on improving their core technology, while leaving the manufacturing to NieuweWeme.
Our Approach
NieuweWeme was selected to handle the full production and integration of several of these advanced 1 MW systems. Each unit was built inside specially modified and stacked 20ft containers, transformed in-house to accommodate Plug Power’s electrolyzer technology and critical subsystems.
Our team worked in close collaboration with Plug’s engineers to ensure every system met the strict safety, performance, and hydrogen-specific requirements. From structural modifications and piping to electrical integration and control cabinet installation, all work was carried out under one roof to minimize lead times and eliminate scope splits.
The result: a fully containerized, ready-to-deploy hydrogen production package, designed to be operational on-site with minimal setup time.

The Result
Multiple 1 MW plug-and-play hydrogen systems have now been successfully produced and delivered, contributing directly to the deployment of green hydrogen infrastructure around the world. These systems are now used in applications such as off-grid renewable energy sites, offshore wind developments, and decentralized hydrogen hubs.
Together, Plug Power and NieuweWeme have proven that containerized hydrogen production is not only possible—but scalable.
