The Challenge

With the expansion of deposit return policies in the Netherlands, Statiegeld Nederland needed a scalable and user-friendly way to handle large volumes of returned bottles and cans in high-traffic locations. The solution: a mobile, containerized bulk return system where users can deposit entire bags of returnable packaging at once and receive their refund digitally via Tikkie.

NieuweWeme was brought on board to develop and produce the physical container systems—from structural modification and internal layout to electrical integration and system readiness for the automated bulk deposit units provided by RVM Systems.

Our Approach

The project began with the development and production of the first few mobile statiegeld containers—based on a 10ft modified container concept. Each unit was adapted in-house, with NieuweWeme performing custom welding, cutting, ventilation, and framing to house the internal RVM equipment.

Working closely with Statiegeld Nederland and RVM, NieuweWeme created a design that was robust, mobile, and modular—enabling quick setup at a variety of public locations and easy servicing access. The system was designed to accept up to 120 bottles or cans at once, drastically reducing queues and manual handling.

Following the successful launch, NieuweWeme has now scaled up into serial production, with new units rolling out to support the nationwide push for cleaner streets, more recycling, and digital convenience.
